The Internet of Things

What is the real meaning of Internet of Things? Some may think it as another buzz word such as green technology. However, it has a real meaning when it comes to IT and technology. It is the interconnection of computing devices within the current Internet infrastructure including devices, systems and services. These devices and services refers to a wide variety including sensors in automobiles, biotech devices such as heart monitoring implants, field operation devices, equipment used by fire fighters to name a few.

Gartner indicates that there may be more than 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020. Another agency estimates that more than 30 billion devices will be wirelessly connected to the Internet of Things by the same year. Pew Research finds these devices to have beneficial impacts in the future. Almost all devices use an IP address, limited availability of addresses may become an issue for Internet of Things in the future. Some say it will not be a problem because address space can be exponentially expanded.

The concept was in development for decades and finally identified in 1999. The Internet connected appliance, a Coke machine was developed and put into operation in 1980s where users were able to check the status of the stock via a computer.
